Their Next MMO will be
|
|
If Blizzard is following the same trend that they did with the release of Warcraft III and then WoW, my belief that their next MMO would be in the Starcraft universe. The Starcraft 2 game would a "filler" game to expand on its lore and prepare for its MMO introduction.
It's either that or Diablo MMO, though I've no idea how they're going to hash that out. Beyond that, I just do not see Blizzard throwing something brand new into the mix as it may be way TOO risky to invest in. Just like how they canned Starcraft Ghost swiftly, and that cartoonish Warcraft game back in the 90s.
Aside from that, I feel that World of Warcraft will soon be going into a decline* - not end, but like just be in the back of everyone's head as a memoir. In other words, it'll be how EverQuest 1 happened: 1)Shock and Awe, 2)peak, 3)slow decline. Which I believe WoW's nearing its peak. But it won't end because it's simply a solid cash cow for Blizzard and they won't pull the plug forever if they can.
*There are a few personal references that I feel are making the game extreme and/or hinting that it is peaking. One would be that the next expansion is set to introduce Arthas, a major character of the Warcraft universe, which could suggest WoW is hitting its top soon (somewhat like how Planes of Power expansion for EQ1 introduced the gods to the players, and in my view, was EQ1's pinnacle before its decline). Another assumption would also be that people simply get older; life moves on, other interests come into the picture, and like I said above, WoW will turn into a memoir.
Ok, enough of my rambling. Back into nihilism. ^.^

I agree with your assessment that WoW is nearing its peak. Acutally, I think it has already hit that point. It will definitely be a memoir when all is said and done, that is for sure. No other game I have ever played has consumed as much of my time as this one has, and I've made some really good lasting friendships as a result.
It would be interesting to see if SC2 is paving the way for an MMO the same way that WC3 did. Time will tell. In the meantime, I look forward to this Bioware MMO that's in the works if it is indeed a KOTOR MMO. All indications so far point to this being the case. It would be really nice to have a Star Wars MMO that gets it "right".

As Rine has stated I feel the disturbance in the force as well.
WoW is on a decline, well soon to be, with the deliverance of DX10 and what it can do. I just can't see it being the top game anymore. I have had my share of fun and heart ache with the game.
I think most of all I miss my friends, I miss the raids and the accomplishment that came with beating a new boss. There are just so many games that are coming out that I am interested in.
Warhammer and Age of Conan are tops on my list, I know that we all have our own opinions of hell gate London, but tabula rasa is a fun game. Where did that come from.
I think all in all I miss the lot of you. I cant wait till there is a game that brings us all back together.
Whether it be a Blizzard game or not, I look forward to it.

Yea, these games don't last forever. Technology, trends, and people all move on.
That said, I miss all of you guys. I hope something else comes out that we all can enjoy. All the same, I'll be playing WoW through at least the next expansion.

Man, theres so many wonderful prospects on the horizon:
Fallout MMO
Exanimus
Bioware MMO
Warhammer 40K MMO
Pirates of the Burning Seas
Conan
Warhammer Online
Marvel Universe
DC Universe
I like sword and sorcery, but man I'd enjoy a Starcraft MMO or Fallout MMO so much more. Even the Marvel MMO would a much needed change of pace, and I believe Cryptic (City of Heroes) is working on it. Hopefully, they'll build upon everything they did right with CoH and make a totally badass game, while managing to fix the shit parts, hehe.

The reason I cannot see it being a Diablo MMO, is because it'll be too closely resembling World of Warcraft, as you already have a "dungeons and dragons" theme to it. Why create something that looks too alike? Or why even risk it?
This is why, I think, Richard Garriot created Tabula Rasa: besides SWG, many MMOs were similar to the "dungeons and dragons" feel. Going outer space or something futuristic would be a welcoming changing to the norm.

I agree with Serinay on the unlikliness of a Diablo MMO because its too similar to WoW with the whole sword-and-sorcery thing.

not to mention Hellgate is pretty much Diablo 3, considering the entire team who made Diablo 2 quit Blizzard and started flagship when they started WoW.
